Session Description:
Other People's Lives will be a power point presentation about researching and writing biographies for young readers of all ages. Children are seeking role models to learn how to live their own lives and they turn to true stories about others who have overcome obstacles to achieve their goals. Susan Goldman Rubin will show illustrations and discuss examples from some of her titles including biographies of artists Roy Lichtenstein and Wayne Thiebaud, and Holocaust survivor, scholar and activist, Simon Wiesenthal. In her session, she will stress the importance of primary research to make a book authentic.

Session Description:
Learn free or low-cost enhancements to your library program that will enrich your existing collaborations with teachers, students, families, and the school community. Brainstorm ways that you can take home ideas tailored to your specific grade levels and community. Participants will learn to adapt culturally responsive teaching methods to make students active participants in the learning process. The presenters will suggest ways participants can use specific public relations initiatives to draw in members of the local business community as library supporters. Design activities to bring parents into the library during Back to School Nights and Open House evening events. Bring your own success stories to share. This session will be useful for all library staff.

Session Description:
In this session we will examine three theoretical perspectives from the language and literacy field useful in framing a new vision and appreciation for the capacity of the school library to serve student literacy development. The focus will be on seeing the place and space of the library as a site for learning and practicing literacies. Questions include: How do the three theories relate to on-the-ground instruction of information literacy? What linkages can be made from theory to reading comprehension processes, strategy instruction, and collaborative work between teacher and teacher-librarian? Participants will build their repertoire of arguments in support of powerful school libraries and pick up some instructional ideas as well.

Principles, Practices and Motivational Strategies for At-Risk Youth and other Reluctant Readers: Reversing reading reluctance may be the most powerful intervention in preventing adult incarceration, school truancy, behavioral disasters, and social/cultural/emotional/academic dysfunction. The presenter's slide presentation covers the creative process that he applies to illustrating text. The challenges of making pictures to go with classic nursery rhymes will be presented from the point-of-view of an illustrator. The discussion will include the personal influences, brainstorming, research, creative thinking, penciling, revising, and painting that went into the creation of his book Mother Goose in California.
