Teens are adept at sending instant messages to their friends or downloading their favorite songs from the Internet. But teens need help learning how to use nonprint resources for education and personal growth. That's where teacher librarians come in! YALSA's Teen Tech Week is a chance for school libraries to open their physical and virtual doors and show off the nonprint resources they have. Learn how to plan a Teen Tech Week celebration at your school in collaboration with your community -- whether your library has one computer or 100! Teen Tech Week is March 7-13, 2010.

Session Title: W10 - Reinventing a Library Practice Curriculum

Presenter Biography

Session Description:

Is your library practice curriculum lacking rigor? Are your students knowledgeable enough to assist patrons in the use of all library resources: catalog, reference, databases, and Internet? These questions provided the basis for a new library practice curriculum developed during the 2008-09 school year. The workshop will follow the development of the curriculum during the course of the year, discuss the activities, look at student work examples, personal reflections, and close with an open discussion, looking at the curriculum critically, how it can be improved, and how participants would tailor it to meet their student’s needs. Participants will receive all the associated files, which can be edited to meet their needs.

Session Title: Tasty Test-Prep Tidbits in the Library: Information Literacy & the CST

Session Description:

Teacher Librarians from the Chaffey Joint Union High School District will discuss the connection between information literacy skills and the California Standards Test for English/Language Arts. They will also demonstrate ways to use test-preparation questions related to information literacy with students in and out of the library to help students prepare for the CST test.

During these past few years of extreme budget cuts, library technicians in our district have had to repeatedly justify our worth to the school board. We will share how our deliberate plan made an impact and saved the jobs of all of our elementary technicians. Through community involvement and extracurricular activities, our two high schools have become thriving hubs of excitement and learning. We will share practical and inexpensive ideas on how to promote your library and make it a vibrant and exciting place that students will seek out.

This session will explain the project, address its pedagogical foundation, and share the resources being made available to support educators and students who wish to share their Lit Trips. Google Lit Trips was recently selected by the Asia Society to receive the 2008 Goldman Sachs Prize for Excellence in International Education for Media/Technology.
